Naturalist

What it does

The naturalist answers questions about animals, and when an animal may be ill, hurt or poisoned, the first thing it says is to contact a vet.

  • Species and normal behaviour: what is normal, and what change is worth taking to a vet.
  • Everyday care questions about pets.
  • In an emergency such as a pet eating something it shouldn’t, it tells you to contact a vet now and what to have ready for the call.
  • With the Field Notes skill unlocked, it adds behavioural context and comparisons between species.

What it reads

  • Your message and the conversation so far.
  • Long-term memory of earlier conversations, such as your pet’s name and species.

It does not read your health journal, body records, plans or inner context. Nothing about your own health belongs in an animal question.

What it produces

A conversational reply, as text or read aloud.

Human oversight

  • You contact the vet. The naturalist gives a first answer and points you to a vet; it doesn’t replace one.

Model

Qwen3.6-35B-A3B, by Qwen, licensed Apache-2.0. Runink domain adaptation for this agent is planned; this release uses the base model.

Where it runs and data handling

On Runink-operated servers, not on your phone. No third-party AI service is called. On the phone apps, spoken replies are read aloud by the phone’s own speech engine. See Privacy and data.

Guardrails

  • Not a vet. Illness, injury, poisoning or distress means contact a vet first.
  • It never advises human medication for an animal, and won’t give a dose for an animal. Several common human painkillers are toxic to dogs and cats. It asks you to ring a vet, who can advise over the phone.
  • It won’t help harm an animal. Questions about fleas, ticks and worming are still answered.
  • It should flag when it is unsure rather than guess.

See Safety for the full list.

Limitations

  • It doesn’t diagnose an animal.
  • Chat doesn’t take photos, so it works only from what you describe.

Illustrative example

Invented data.

You: My dog just ate a bar of dark chocolate.

Luna (naturalist): Call your vet or an emergency vet now. Dark chocolate is the most dangerous kind for dogs. Don’t try to make him sick unless the vet tells you to. Have ready what he ate, roughly how much, when, and his weight.
